Strips
A type of stop loss order that essentially becomes a limit order once a price threshold is crossed.
Accrued interest
The amount of interest accumulated on a bond but not yet paid.
Bond duration
The duration is a measure of the average time it takes a bondholder to get their money (both principal and interest).
Modified duration
Modified duration is a measure of the sensitivity of a bond price to interest rates.
YTM (Yield to maturity)/Redemption yield
The IRR a buyer would receive by purchasing a bond at the current market price.
Gilts
British government bonds. A very wide range of gilts are in issue at any given time.
Eurobonds
Bonds issued in a currency other than the issuer’s home currency. Usually outside the issuer’s home country as bearer bonds.
Hybrid security
A hybrid security or hybrid instrument is a security that has characteristics of both debt and equity.
PIBS (permanent interest bearing shares)
Securities issued by building societies that pay fixed interest. Often not redeemable.
Preference shares
Shares that pay fixed dividends: payment of both dividends and capital takes priority over that of ordinary shares.
Clean price
The clean price of a bond is the dirty price less the accrued interest.
Dirty price
The dirty price of a bond is the actual amount paid to buy a bond. Unlike the clean price it is not adjusted for accrued interest.
