VOIP
The use of internet protocol networks to carry voice phone calls. Can be less reliable if the network used is not structured for this purpose.
Termination rates
The payment made by a telecoms network originating a phone call, to that to which the call is made.
ARPU
The revenues from the services divided by the number of clients buying those services.
Churn
The number of new subscribers who replacing those who have cancelled the service as a proportion of the total number of subscribers.
KPI (Key performance indicators)
Indicators of the performance of a telecoms business in terms of customers and revenue generation.
Proportionate
Numbers that include each subsidiaries’ and associates’ numbers in proportion to the group shareholding in them. Often used by mobile telecoms companies.
Subscriber acquisition cost
Subscriber acquisition cost. The total cost of signing up a new customer; often used by mobile phone networks.
Dark fibre
Fibre optic cable that has been laid but is not currently used.
Local loop unbundling
A regulators requirement that incumbent telecoms companies allow other operators to use their local loops at wholesale rates.
Wi-Fi
A set of standards for technology allowing computers and other devices to communicate using radio connections instead of cables.
Walled garden
Access to a telecoms services restricted to the providers own content.
