OTC drug
A drug which does not require a prescription to be sold; generally less profitable than prescription drugs.
Prescription drug
A drug that may only be sold by a pharmacist when authorised by a written prescription from a medical practitioner.
Orphan Drugs
A designation that gives pharmaceutical companies additional incentives to develop particular drugs, usually for rare diseases.
Drug pipeline
The drugs a pharmaceutical company is developing testing. This includes completely new drugs, variants of old drugs and new applications of old drugs.
Clinical trials
The testing new of drugs and vaccines by administering them to people in order to demonstrate their safety and effectiveness to regulators. A key part of the approval process.
