Local loop unbundling
A regulators requirement that incumbent telecoms companies allow other operators to use their local loops at wholesale rates.
Natural monopoly
A monopoly that arises from the nature of the industry, rather than being imposed by law or resulting from anti-competitive practices.
ARPU
The revenues from the services divided by the number of clients buying those services.
KPI (Key performance indicators)
Indicators of the performance of a telecoms business in terms of customers and revenue generation.
Churn
The number of new subscribers who replacing those who have cancelled the service as a proportion of the total number of subscribers.
Proportionate
Numbers that include each subsidiaries’ and associates’ numbers in proportion to the group shareholding in them. Often used by mobile telecoms companies.
Subscriber acquisition cost
Subscriber acquisition cost. The total cost of signing up a new customer; often used by mobile phone networks.
Data revenues
The revenue generated from carrying data rather than voice telecommunications traffic. Data revenues are likely to have different margins and growth prospects from voice.
Termination rates
The payment made by a telecoms network originating a phone call, to that to which the call is made.
