Interest margin

Interest margin is:

(interest income - interest expense) ÷average interest earning assets

as a percentage.

The interest earning assets are essentially various forms of lending.

This is essentially the gross profit that is earned by a bank on its lending.

Interest margin is very similar to interest spread, but interest margin is lower than interest spread because of the effect of the reserve requirement, the need to maintain working balances, etc.
