Put option

An option that gives its holder the right to sell the underlying asset at a pre-determined price.

The most obvious use of put options is to hedge a position in the underlying security. As put options are not available for all securities, investors may also use hedging strategies that rely on options on market indicies, as well as more complex strategies.

Put options may also be used as part of more complex hedging and arbitrage strategies.
