Real interest rates
Interest rates adjusted for inflation: (1+r)/(1 + i) - 1 where r is the nominal interest rates and i is inflation.
Real terms
The change in a financial number after correcting for the effect of inflation.
Expected return
The average of all possible returns an investment will produce, weighted by probability.
Absolute return
An absolute return is the actual amount of money made by an investment ; the actual gain as a percentage of the amount invested.
Abnormal return
The excess of actual return over the level of return that would be expected given the riskiness of a portfolio.
Total return
The combined gains on an investment from both capital gains and income.
Relative returns
The return on an investment less the market return.
Excess return
The amount by which the return on an investment is greater than the risk free rate of return.
